From 12 to 25 May 2011 the second Via Claudia Augusta Cycle Relay will proceed along the 700 km route from the Danube to Altino, near Venice. Delegations of the over 100 municipalities along the historic route will each send a Latin message from their own community centre to the next. This will send out a strong signal that the Via Claudia Augusta is more than a successful tourist route. Since the Romans upgraded the paths of the Celts, Rhaeto tribes and Etruscans to create the first proper road from Southern Europe across the Alps to the north it has been a major connecting axis economically, culturally and in other respects. Today it is again increasingly reflecting a common identity. The main purpose of the cycle relay is to enable the history and community linking the peoples to be experienced. Many municipalities are therefore taking the cycle relay as an opportunity to engage in activities with their citizens - immediately when it passes through their communities or on the preceding or following days.
Quarto D'Altino near Venice and Donauwörth on the Bavarian Danube, the two starting and end points of the Via Claudia Augusta, are putting on major festivities on 7 and 8 May to rally support for the Via Claudia Augusta and the cycle relay. Quarto D'Altino is inviting all municipalities, local organisations, manufacturers and marketers of typical products, tourism experts and the like to present the special features of their communities at a market on the streets of the town. Donauwörth is celebrating the opening festival of the season on the island of Ried out of which the town developed and already makes traditional use of this to underline its special location on the Via Claudia Augusta.
Neumarkt, once the location of the Roman rest stop Endidae, will be hosting a Roman festival with a Roman camp, Roman cuisine etc. on 21 and 22 May when the cycle relay passes through the market town in the southern part of the South Tyrol.
