Route description for "Vallagarina-Verona-Ostiglia" stretch
We include on the following pages a brief description of the "Vallagarina-Verona-Ostiglia" stretch of the Via Claudia Augusta with their special features and accommodation as you continue your journey from north to south along the Via Claudia Augusta. Although you have to scroll somewhat you can also print out the entire stretch of route at once. You can use the introductory menu to skip directly to each segment.
The first section of the alternative route passes through the most southerly part of the Adige valley, which is still in the Alps. Overlooked by impressive fortresses built during the Austro-Hungarian era, the Vallagarina, home to the Marzemino grape, is dedicated to viticulture.
Other points of interest en route are the imposing Castel Beseno fortress, the "Strada del Vino e dei Sapori della Vallagarina" wine tasting route, the small Baroque jewel of Villa Lagarina and the administrative centre for the region, Rovereto, which boasts some remarkable contrasts: you could visit the Castello di Rovereto, which boasts the largest collection of World War I weapons and armour. Or you could stop and admire a collection of 20th century art in the futuristic Museum Mart. Stop off and admire the remains of a Roman villa further south in Isera or pay a visit to the small Baroque town of Ala.

This section follows the Adige out of the Alpine region into the Valpolicella plain and then carries on to Verona.
The Valpolicella plain starts at Dolcè just beyond the border between Trentino and Veneto. As you would imagine it is a town with an abundance of wine cellars. Soon after comes Verona with its world-famous Roman arena, which can accommodate 25,000 people. The city-centre area around the Piazza Erbe was a feature of the city even in Roman times. Also not that far from the arena is the famous House of Juliet, Romeo's unhappy lover.

The last section of the alternative route crosses the plain of Verona to what was once an important Roman port, now the small, rice-growing town of Ostiglia on the River Po.
On the way you will pass through Sommacampagna and Isola della Scala. The Archaeological Museum in Nogara retells the history of the region, starting with exhibits recalling the pile dwellings of the early Etruscans. You will soon encounter the first of the rice fields, which line the road into Ostiglia. The ancient town of Hostiglia survives in the form of numerous historic artefacts, now kept in the 19th century Palazzo Foglia, the towers of the medieval fortress, various 18th century buildings and the Santuario della Madonna della Comuna church.
