Bike shuttles
up and over the hills
in Tyrol, Trentino
and Veneto

The Romans chose the route over the Fernpass and Reschenpass for the first road across the Alps to connect Europe for a reason. It is one of the easiest Alpine crossings. Today, the shuttles for cyclists and bikes up and over the larger hills make the Via Claudia Augusta the easiest Alpine crossing for touring cyclists. Thanks to the bike shuttles, the cycle route in the footsteps of the Romans is also suitable for families and fit pensioners without an e-bike. Please note that there are bike shuttles that only run on demand and must be booked in advance. However, most bike shuttles are public transportation with bike transport options. Below you will find all bike shuttles from north to south and - where possible - booking options. As a special treat, we have also described at the beginning the possibility of traveling by boat on the tracks of the Via Claudia Augusta across Lake Forggensee to the Alps, and at the end the possibility of traveling by boat on historical tracks, through beautiful nature from Altino through the lagoon to Venice, both unique experiences.

across the Forggensee

On the trail of the Roman road with the Forggensee boat trip across the lake.

The Forggensee is Germany's largest reservoir, which exists in the form only in the 50s of the last century. Originally, there were only a few smaller lakes and the Via Claudia Augusta led through the area, which is now covered with water. When the water is successively lowered in winter for power generation, remnants of the Roman road are visible again and one can even partly walk on it. In summer, the water level has priority over power generation and you can follow the historical traces on the lake shore or with the Forggensee boat ride. When you can get on and off where can be found here (unfortunately only in German).

With the Ausserfernbahn train
from Reutte to
Heiterwang am See

Between Reutte and Heiterwang the bike route leads a few 100 meters over a partly somewhat steeper gravel path to Ehrenberg and then partly over rather coarse gravel paths to Heiterwang am See. However, this section can be bridged with the Ausserfernbahn. Entry: "Reutte in Tirol", exit: "Heiterwang-Plansee" select date and time and click first on "Suchen". In the window that then opens, click further down on "Verbindungen mit verfügbaren Fahrradstellplätzen anzeigen" (= Show connections with available bicycle parking spaces) and click on "Suchen" again. Attention, buses are also displayed, but with buses the bike transport is still not secured. As a rule, bicycles in German S-Bahn trains are transported in the car just behind the railcar. The ride from Reutte to Heiterwang takes only 9 minutes. If you're in a hurry or the weather does not do as it should, you can also go to Lermoos and / or get on earlier.

By public bus
with bike transport option
over the Fernpass

Attention, this bike shuttle takes place with public buses and can only be booked at the ticket counter or with the bus driver

The passenger pays a route-dependent fee, a fixed fee is to be paid for the bike.

Bikes are transported on a bike carrier at the rear of the bus (unfortunately, e-bikes cannot be transported, as they pose a danger to passengers inside the bus, the carriers are not designed for the weight of e-bikes and suspended e-bikes can be damaged by their own weight). The number of seats is limited. Therefore, it is recommended to be at the boarding point a little earlier.

Below we have included a timetable information with pre-filled entry "BIBERWIER, Kirchplatz" or "FERNSTEIN". Normally cyclists go from Biberwier to Fernstein or vice versa. But you can also choose your own entry and exit. the line runs between Reutte and Nassereith and vice versa.

By public bus
with bike transport option
to the Reschen Pass

From the Inn Valley up to Nauders, or visit Altinstermünz and then from Hochfinstermünz to Nauders.

Please note that this bike shuttle is operated by public buses and can only be booked at the ticket counter or with the bus driver

The passenger pays a distance-based fee, a fixed fee must be paid for the bike

The bikes are transported on a bike rack at the rear of the bus E-bikes can also be transported from 2024 (we hope in time for the start of the season). Places are limited. It is therefore advisable to be at the boarding point a little earlier.

To get up to Nauders from the Inntal valley, get on at the "Pfunds Kajetansbrücke" stop and travel to "Nauders (Tirol) Mühlen".
If you would like to visit the Altfinstermünz customs station, which was founded in the Middle Ages, ride your bike up to there, take a look at the customs station and then ride or push your bike up the Bierweg to the "Nauders (Tirol) Hochfinstermünz" stop and ride from there to "Nauders (Tirol) Dorf".

We have included a form for timetable information with a pre-filled boarding point "Kajetansbrücke" and another form with a boarding point "Hochfinstermünz". The 210 and 273 lines run between Landeck and Nauders (partly Mals) and vice versa and you can also choose an earlier boarding point yourself.

by train
over the hill
into the Valsugana

Between Trento and the Valsugana, the first major hill along the Via Claudia Augusta "Altinate" between Trento and Altino must be overcome. Since there is no possibility at the bottom of the valley, the bike route even goes a little above the bottom of the valley. If you want to skip this hill, you can get on the Valsugana train (treni della Valsugana) at Trento station and take it to Pergine Valsugana. On this page you will find the latest information about train services and bike transport in English

Shuttle over the passes
between Trento and
the wide plain of the Veneto

Due to a lack of interest in the other shuttle services, there is now only one shuttle over the most challenging of the 3 passes between the Valsugana and the Veneto plain, namely the shuttle service from the Piazze di Mel (main town of the municipality of Borgo Valbelluna) to the Praderadego Pass (online booking below). This third and final pass along the original route of the Via Claudia Augusta is the most challenging and can only be tackled by very fit cyclists or, in some cases, by pushing. Alternatively, you can also cycle on the road, westwards through the Piave Valley, around the last mountain ridge before the Veneto plain, which also has its charm in one half of the route along the Strada del Prosecco through the probably most famous Prosecco community of Valdobbiadene.

Until 2024 there was also
a shuttle from Castelnuovo in the Valsugana valley to the Tesino high valley
a shuttle from Ponte Oltra (between Lamon and Sovramonte) and the Croce D'Aune Pass and

It is also relatively easy to get from Castelnuovo in the Vasugana Valley to the Tesino high valley under your own steam, which is why even travelers without an e-bike ride this section themselves and there have been hardly any bookings recently.

The Lamon - Feltre section over the Croce D'Aune Pass is more challenging because it is a relatively long uphill ride. Nevertheless, many people cycle it without an e-bike and allow enough time for it. Alternatively, you can also cycle down from Lamon to Fonzaso on the valley floor and from there on a relatively flat route to Feltre.

with the Barca
from Altino through the lagoon
to Venice

In Altino was the Roman port city of Altino, if you will the ancient Venice. During the migration of peoples, more and more inhabitants of the city retreated to the lagoon protected by the water, first to the smaller islands, then Venice developed. Today, following the traces of history, through beautiful nature, you can sail from the small harbor not far from the new museum in Altino through the lagoon to Venice. A very special experience.
